Penny Pincher
03:24
|
|||
Lord knows I'm liable to have a good time
and y'all know I'll do what I can to make sure you're all feeling fine
times are hard you got a lot on your mind
pinch all the pennies you like but don't pinch mine
Walkin' round feeling down on my luck
I got no pink carnation got no pickup truck
just my worn out shoes and two college degrees
and now I'm third in line to pump 'pane down in New Orleans
lookin' at my empty fridge a knock at the door
we like your unpaid work so much we'd like to give you some more
I said...
Lord knows I'm liable to have a good time
and y'all know I'll do what I can to make sure you're all feeling fine
times are hard you got a lot on your mind
pinch all the pennies you like but don't pinch mine
You got a lot of gall lecturing me
when you never paid no rent and got your schoolin' for free
you got in early while I came late
and now you're killin' time buyin' up all the real estate
you been at the trough and now you've had your fill
so you're workin' on retiring sending me the bill
I said...
Lord knows I'm liable to have a good time
and y'all know I'll do what I can to make sure you're all feeling fine
times are hard you got a lot on your mind
pinch all the pennies you like but don't pinch mine

Get Serious
02:39
|
|||
I got better things to do with my time
than sit around watch you drinking my wine
by now we should be so much further along
come on
'Time is money honey' is that who you are?
'cause it ain't living darling working so hard
one day we really should think through this again
when?
Get serious
We don't need all the junk that's on sale
just smiles on our faces and food on the table
I got no use for all that fooling around
Get serious
This is it - now's the time
gotta work it on out
who we'll be for the rest of our lives
and what'll we do
We can be who we want
we can make it ourselves
simple life - make a home
oh darling what'll we do
Hallelujah when it's no longer just me and you

Keppel Street
03:51
|
|||
Well I'm walking down Keppel Street
I'm watching the shops close down
this time last year this place had a buzz
what's going on in this town?
and I'm way past hungry
there's nowhere to go
it's as if some unseen hand from some unseen man
was pulling the strings and he don't like his food slow
but it's dead in the street
tell me where I'm s'posed to eat
There's a boy up at Machattie park
a girl down getting off a train
and nothing to do and nowhere to go
and nothing but For Lease signs in every shop window
and he's so cool and she's so fine
if they got together they could have a good time
and you know it
but it's dead in the street
tell me how they're s'posed to meet
Now they're hyping up the heritage
while they're pulling the cottages down
call it hypocrisy call it bald faced lies
call it playing the middle against both of the sides
he likes his new buildings old
his old buildings gone
he calls it business I call it getting it wrong
and you don't do anything soulful or thoughtful or slow
just tilt up a concrete box turn the AC way down low
and it's dead in the street
tell me how we're s'posed to meet

Dead End Street
03:14
|
|||
Another fine mess I've gotten us into
I'm all in with my chips and yours - am I in too deep?
but my darling I had my reasons
and the best of intentions
am I starting down a dead end
starting down a dead end street
I wanted something for us that we didn't have
I wanted the sky and I wanted the space in between
and for this have I driven us over the edge
am I out of control
am I starting down a dead end
starting down a dead end street
And now here we are and winter is coming
do I have what it takes or do I run back with my tail between my legs
did I see a chance that in fact just wasn't here
am I out of control
am I starting down a dead end
starting down a dead end street

Believe
03:26
|
|||
I got a lot of time for people who believe
you know they've seen the evidence just like you and me
when the numbers are in and all the scientists agree
they close their eyes and smile and choose to believe
I think it's important to not that that don't make them right
have we not started enough wars with God on our side?
but for the hungry and the broken looking for a place to hide
faith is a warm hand to hold in the cold dark night
Someday we'll all be together again
that day is coming it's a question of when
but to cling to your book unprepared to hear or to bend
are there not enough lines already between us and them?
Well we're sitting here hoping for change in the world
well you know you've gotta be it
and there is good in our enemies somewhere
we gotta look over and see it
This world could never be perfect I suppose
and I can see the appeal in some great beyond
but let me leave you now with my last question to pose
would you try a little harder if this is all there was?

Road to Damascus
04:08
|
|||
Dust dust everywhere
nor any drop to drink
you can have it all laid out in front of you
but it don't make you think
well I don't know but I've been told
the streets of heaven are paved with gold
Well there ain't no honour for a hometown prophet
the unwanted messenger is shot by the mesengee
I see Steve walking down the street with his eyes to the skies
I said "tell me Steve what do you see?"
he said "the Father Son and the Holy Ghost"
you grab the stones I'll hold your coat
I found myself on the road to Damascus
things are gonna change
I found myself on the road to Damascus
Well I packed myself up and took the show on the road
the work don't do itself so I gotta take a trip outta town
I was most the way there when a light from the sky
shone right in my eyes and a voice knocked me down on the ground
He said "son have you lost your mind?"
my vision had left me blind
I found myself on the road to Damascus
things are gonna change
I found myself on the road to Damascus
They led me to town down a street called straight
didn't eat or drink nothing for three days and three nights
a man came said "you're the chosen one it's your turn to run"
and the scales fell away from my eyes
an angry mob was coming to call
they let me down through a hole in the wall
I found myself on the road to Damascus
things are gonna change
I found myself on the road to Damascus

I Remember
05:46
|
|||
I remember us as we never were
you on the deck admire the view I'll put the kettle on
I remember us as we never were
you bathed in sunlight me struck dumb
I remember us as we never were
standing face to face and wondering
if now is when it's gonna happen
I remember I remember I remember I remember
I remember us as lovers
I close my eyes
I hear your breath
All this time I've been thinking of holding you
watching your lips when I should be listening
keeping an eye on the curve of your neck
and thinking 'bout the kind of kiss I could plant there
do you see it baby burning inside of me
do you hear it honey call calling your name
do I detect the vaguest traces that you feel the same?
do I even have the courage honey
is this whole damn thing in my head
would my time be better spent beneath the cold harsh light of reality instead?
but it feels so real to me baby
I can see it all as if it were there
clear as day in my mind's eye
I remember us as lovers
I close my eyes
I hear your breath

Go Tell
04:00
|
|||
Wednesday morning the word came down
caught you by surprise
ah but after the future's been told
it's too late to close your eyes
and act as though
you don't know what you know
No one's gonna believe you
it goes without being said
who'd believe in their wildest of dreams
the sky could fall down on your head
but you're out on the roof
looking for some kind of proof
Go and tell your teacher
go and tell your priest
tell your ma and pa at least
tell the dean of transport
tell the head of state
tell them all it's too late
Are you just being selfish
in this thankless task
door to door pushing answers
to questions nobody asked
and once they know
it's too late to say I told you so
Go and tell your teacher
go and tell your priest
tell your ma and pa at least
tell the dean of transport
tell the head of state
tell them all it's too late
Tell the chamber of commerce
tell the agents of real estate
tell them all it's too late

They've done you a favour boy
letting you go
you're suddenly free when you'd just started to see
you built a trap for yourself
and dressed it up as playing your part
they've done you a favour boy
breaking your heart
The unknown is deep and dark
you're off the map and here be dragons
from here on we're playing by ear
the unknown is cold and vast
you're lost in the woods and your dze num tsum is busted
breathe and sense the chances drawing near
Leap and the net will appear
You don't know how well you can run
while you're balanced on a ball
you're suddenly free
you could send up a flare
but then no one would hear you calling
you don't know how well you can catch
till it's you that's falling
The unknown is deep and dark
you're off the map and here be dragons
from here on we're playing by ear
the unknown is cold and vast
you're lost in the woods and your dze num tsum is busted
breathe and sense the chances drawing near
Leap and the net will appear

The time came for dancing so we danced
all was clumsy high romance
could this next be our final sway?
now may be a good time to walk away
The time came for laughing so we laughed
fuelled endless mirth with crude word craft
are we running low on things to say?
now may be a good time to walk away
The time came for singing so we sang
through hallowed halls our high hopes rang
have we played all our songs to play?
now may be a good time to walk away

Let the River Go
03:41
|
|||
I saw the world stretched out before me
bending itself into the flow
but there's somewhere else I need to be
I had to let the river go
I stood knee deep and wondered
felt it's pull clear constant and slow
I watched it press a different path to mine
I had to let the river go
Seven long years in the wilderness
piling stone upon stone on my own
while the suits decide where the walls go
I never thanked you for getting me out of there
I never told you how much it meant
when you took me by the hand and said
"stop living life like it's some kind of accident"
I leapt head long and drifted
everything around me felt so still
till I look ashore and see that I've been taken for a ride
I had to let the river go

Blues For Lee
02:35
|
|||
Imagine there's no stairway to heaven it's easy if you try
Imagine there's no stairway
it's easy
where's a poor boy like you headed when you go and die?
I'm holding back my tears though my heart it aches
I'm holding back my tears though my heart it aches
what am I gonna do when this levy breaks?
When I heard it through the grapevine you were gone
When I heard it through the grapevine you were gone
I said "there's another poor boy who got wrong"
When they sing you from the church house
amazing grace how sweet the sound
When they sing you from the church house how sweet the sound
too sweet for this hard world
and much too young to go down in the ground
